On February 23, 2016, the Movement Advancement Project and the
Center for American Progress, in partnership with the Advancement
Project, Forward Together, and Just Leadership USA will release a major
report released analyzing how the United States criminal justice system
is broken, disproportionately targeting vulnerable populations,
especially lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and
particularly LGBT people of color.
Unjust: How the Broken Criminal
Justice System Fails LGBT People will document how pervasive stigma and
discrimination, discriminatory enforcement of laws, and discriminatory
policing strategies mean that LGBT people are disproportionately likely
to interact with law enforcement and enter the criminal justice system.
LGBT people are treated unfairly once they enter the system and are more
likely to be incarcerated and face abuse once incarcerated. LGBT people
also face additional challenges in the struggle to rebuild their lives
after experiences with law enforcement—and particularly after time spent
in a correctional facility.
The report also includes high-level
recommendations focused on:
* Reducing the number of LGBT people,
particularly LGBT people of color and low-income LGBT people, who come
into contact with law enforcement.
* Improving access to justice for
LGBT people and eliminating abusive and inhumane conditions of
confinement.
* Creating an environment in which LGBT people with
criminal records can rebuild their lives and be positive influencers of
change in their communities.
Join us as we spread the word about the
unjust criminal justice system.
